A Darkest Hour-Inspired Menu of British Classics

The war drama Darkest Hour depicts British prime minister Winston Churchill (played by Gary Oldman) grappling with the Nazi threat as it swept across Western Europe. This menu pays homage to those tense days in Britain with a menu of English comfort classics: shepherd’s pie, sticky toffee pudding, and an hors d’oeuvre of cheddar-chutney toasts.

Menu Timeline

One Day Ahead

  • Make the pie dough.
  • Bake the cake for the sticky toffee pudding.

3 Hours Ahead

  • Roll out the dough for the shepherd’s pie crust.
  • Make the shepherd’s pie filling.

1-1/2 Hours Ahead

  • Put the filled shepherd’s pie in the oven.
  • Make the shepherd’s pie topping.
  • Assemble the radish & parsley salad but don’t dress it yet (refrigerate).

1 Hour Ahead

  • Add the topping to the shepherd’s pie and continue to bake.

Just before dinner

  • Assemble the cheddar-chutney toasts.
  • Dress the salad.

Just before dessert

  • Rewarm the cake.
  • Make the sticky toffee sauce.
